    Description

Item up for sale is the original and complete, (28 page,) May 8th, 1945, edition of the New York Daily Mirror newspaper; the lead story of the day was of the unconditional surrender of the Nazi German war machine, which was brought to heel by the allied armies under their Supreme commander, General Dwight D. Eisenhower. The formal place of surrender was still being hashed out. But, for all intensive purposes, German Admiral Karl Doenitz, who had been placed in command of the forces of Germany had already capitulated. Adolph Hitler, was still unaccounted for, as was Herman Goering, and many of the Nazi high command. Propaganda Minister Goebbels, his wife and 4 children were found dead in a Berlin bunker. The war had been catastrophic, officially starting when Germany invaded Poland on September 1st, 1939; almost immediately, Great Britain and France were drawn into the conflict. The combined total of dead in WW II is estimated to be anywhere between 56 to 85 million.
In America there was sheer  jubilation as millions took to the streets to celebrate. In an ominous reminder of what the Nazis had done, at a concentration camp in Oswiecim, Poland, it was learned that 4 million men, woman and children from throughout Europe, were ruthlessly executed there as evidenced by crematoriums, gas chambers, and piles of decaying dead bodies. Garish experiments had been carried out on the living by the brutal SS. Piles of dresses, children's clothing and shoes were also discovered at Oswiecim. But, it was now over, and Hitler's war to end all wars was consigned to another failed undertaking in the history books. It was later  learned that Hitler died by his own hand, and that his wife, Eva Braun, died with him. The celebration would be short lived however, as the war in the pacific raged on. This newspaper is in good condition  and will make a great collectors item; it can still be read after these many years. It is suitable for display with its bold headline.
