Description

Including the new black frame, this sign measures 5.25 inches high and 25.5 inches wide. Completely hand painted reverse on glass, and to protect it, was professionally framed under glass. This is the only "Jewish food" reverse glass sign I have ever seen, and I cannot locate other examples. It is a remarkable survivor, from a Jewish deli in New York City, dating to no later than the 1920's.
A friend of mine who was born in 1938 told me he remembers as a kid in Brooklyn that knishes were always ten cents. A five cent knish was "the old days" from well before he was born.
I searched through all the auction records of reverse glass painted signs from the past fifteen years. Shown in the last two photos are the closest signs I could find in terms of comparable age, color of paint, and usage of the number "5" and the cents symbol.
I will pack this very well and have it sent fully insured with UPS for . Pickups in person are welcome, I am in New York City.
