Vintage Chicago Schwinn HAWK Bicycle, RARE, Military Bike"Air Training Command" decal
Very unique bicycle.
Great candidate for refurbishing. Very similar to the Schwinn Phantom, 1950's, considering the frame and fork.
+ 19", 48.25cm,
+ Original grips, pedals, kickstand
+ Spring fork.
+ Locking mechanism for front fork, (no key): "Cyclelock"
+ Fenders are dented, but original.
Front fender is separated.
+ Bendix brakes
+ Schwinn "Typhoon Corp" tires, 26x2.125
(pretty ratty!)
+ "AS" shock on front
+ The seat appears to be original with the painted white front (but no "S") and has been taped up with masking tape.
+ Serial Number A88359.
(Located on the rear dropout). Schwinn used this serial number twice.
It was either built between January 1 thru 7, 1952 or September 19 thru 23, 1953.
With the "Air Training Command" decal, the bike appears to be part of the
ATC that was organized in 1946 as a re-designation of
Army Air Forces Training Command
(AAFTC) as part of the re-organization of the
United States Army Air Forces
(
USAAF
) after
World War II
.
For nearly 50 years, ATC was the primary training organization of the United States Air Force from its inception as an independent service in September 1947. It provided pilot and aircrew training; technical training, and enlisted and officer basic training.
It could be speculated that this bicycle was used at one or more Air Force bases to transport pilots or other ground personnel during the critical time of pilot training.
I am offering this as a local pick-up, but it can be knocked down to some degree and packed into a bicycle box. It would entail removing the handle bars and pedals. I have not weighed the box nor obtained a box for dimensions. The final method of shipping with the successful bidder will have to be negotiated. A similar bike that I listed was estimated to cost a bit over 0 via FedEx Ground, but of course it depends on the final destination. Dimensions of a typical bicycle box is around 54x30x8".
Thank you for your interest.
