Description

Post WW1 "Spirit of the American Doughboy" cast sculpture by E.M. Viquesney.
In the early 1920s sculptor E.M. Viquesney was commissioned to produce a sculpture commemorating the sacrifices made by US soldiers during WW1. His statue became so popular that about (150) full size versions are scattered in most states across the US.
Seizing on the popularity and patriotic mood of the country a miniature version was produced for American households in Americus, Georgia from 1921-1925. After 1926 they were produced in Spencer, Indiana well into the 1930s.
This is an early example produced in Americus, Georgia. It's approximately (11) inches tall and made of metal so it has some weight
to it. It retains nearly all of it's original finish. The barb wire is complete but it's missing the left hand / rifle. This is very common since
the left hand holding the rifle was not attached to the sculpture when shipped. It was a separate piece that had to be glued in place
by the buyer. Due to poor adhesion or various other reasons it's difficult to find a complete example with an original rifle and unbroken bayonet.
The last photo is a full size Viquesney doughboy located in Sinton, Texas in front of their courthouse. It has some repairs and has
been repainted silver.
